beaming

There are times in your life where you think, "I am exactly where I should be, and doing exactly what I was meant to do."

For us, this is right now.

This past weekend, Adam's FCHS Theatre students competed in their yearly Sub-Region One Act Competition. They performed the medieval morality play Everyman, which Adam was inspired to set in the hospital room of a cancer patient. When you watch this version, you think, "Wow, it was made for this setting." It works so well with the symbols in the show, and with every performance thus far, the audience has left teary-eyed, having learned things they may have never considered, and maybe a few things they simply needed to remember:

"You can't take it with you."

"Family first."

"Beauty fades."

And now, the big news: In his first show (and first competition piece) as a new high school director, Adam's students got first place on their One Act play. FIRST PLACE! What's more, our lead actress (playing the title role) was awarded Best Actress, her "husband" (the character Knowledge) was awarded Best Supporting Actor, and two other actors in our show were awarded All-Star Cast awards--a Sophomore and a Freshman! Awesome.

"I didn't write anything down," said one of the judges' comments, "because I was so taken by your show, I forgot I was a judge."

We left the event Saturday afternoon thrilled... and overwhelmingly humbled.

The next step in the competition is the Region competition this coming Saturday, where we will compete against the top 3 schools from each of the Sub-Regions. From there, each winner (hopefully us!) from the Region competitions will compete at the Georgia State One act competition, a week following Region.

I am so proud of these kids--for how hard they've worked, for the maturity and strength they've shown in handling a medieval morality play, and for how stellar their performances have been thus far. I am also so thrilled for Adam, who is taking to teaching and directing like a fish to water.

Now, on to Region!
